In 2018 I collaborated with the talented crew at Be the Change Group to lead the experience design on an interactive water advisory map for Interior Health of British Columbia.

I worked closely with Be the Change Group and the IH Water team to develop an accessible, real-time updated interactive drinking water map for use by the general public in the Interior Health region of British Columbia.

For the design of the map, I researched ways to display water safety information that is easy to navigate, intuitive, and easily updatable by the admin at Interior Health.

A clear, map and list focused design where users could easily filter by their region and explore around them was settled on.

Additional pages, icons for the four advisory types, and associated FAQ links such as the types of notices were integrated into the design.

The advisory map was tested with the public via in-person user testing. The results of the user testing identified key updates needed for the map including brightening up the designs; increasing contrast between roads, land, and bodies of water; and simplifying the designs by removing extra information that takes away from the main message of the map.

Once changes based on user feedback were incorporated, the advisory map was launched.

Finally I designed a microsite to promote the map as well as to highlight reports created by the team at Be the Change Group.

“Not everyone across IH has peace of mind that the water that comes out of their tap is safe. With this map, individuals are provided accessible and up-to-date information on their water quality,”

IH chief medical health officer Dr. Trevor Corneil
